1. Appendicitis
Appendicitis, which means inflammation of the appendix, is one of the most common reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in the United States. The condition can occur at any age, but it is most common in children and teens.
People who have it may have pain that starts around the belly button, moves lower and to the right, and becomes worse as time goes by. It also usually hurts when you cough, sneeze or inhale.
If the pain spreads across the belly, that is a sign the appendix has burst (see below). This can be life-threatening, as bacteria and debris can get inside the abdomen, causing peritonitis.
The cause of appendicitis is not fully understood, but it is thought to happen when the entrance to the appendix gets blocked, such as a small piece of poo or a blockage in the lymph node in the wall of the bowel. This causes inflammation and swelling, which can increase the pressure within the appendix and lead to it bursting.
2. Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is a common procedure performed by plastic surgeons to improve the appearance of sagging or tired-looking eyelids. It can also be done for medical reasons where droopy eyelids interfere with vision.
During this surgical procedure, your doctor will make incisions that extend along the natural creases of the upper and lower eyelids, removing excess skin and fat. He may tighten muscles in the area and reposition fatty deposits.
The incisions are then closed with either skin glue or sutures that are removed within a week of surgery. Bruising and swelling generally reduce over time as the wounds heal.
You may have some discomfort and bruising following eyelid surgery, but it should be manageable with medication, cold compresses and ointment. Your doctor will provide specific instructions on how to care for your eyes after surgery.
3. Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure to increase the size of your breasts. It can boost self-esteem and help you feel more confident in your body.
During a breast augmentation, a plastic surgeon inserts implants under your breast tissue or chest muscle. The implants are either saline or silicone.
Your plastic surgeon will talk with you about your preferences for the size, shape and feel of your breasts. Then, he or she will explain the different types of breast implants and surgical techniques available, as well as options for implant placement.
You may be awake during the surgery, or you could be given local anesthesia that blocks pain. You’ll probably go home the same day.
Recovery from a breast augmentation takes around eight weeks, during which time your breasts will be sore and sensitive to movement. You should avoid strenuous activities for that time. It’s also important to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions about when you can return to work and other daily activities.
4. Liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from areas of your body that don’t respond to diet and exercise. It can help you sculpt your dream body.
You are a good candidate for liposuction if you’re close to your ideal weight, have stubborn pockets of fat that won’t go away, and are committed to a healthy lifestyle. You also should be free from health problems that could make surgery difficult — such as restricted blood flow, coronary artery disease, diabetes or a weakened immune system.
Your surgeon uses a thin tube (cannula) to remove excess fat from your body. He or she may use a technique called power-assisted liposuction, which is sometimes used to remove larger volumes of fat in tighter areas. The cannula moves back and forth, which makes it easier for your surgeon to remove fat more accurately. He or she might also insert a tumescent solution into the treatment area, which causes your skin to swell and stiffen, helping the fat to be removed more easily.
