Brock Purdy Surgery
After a promising start to his NFL career, brock purdy’s season took a devastating turn when he tore the UCL in his throwing elbow during an NFC Championship Game loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury cost Purdy his first-quarter starting job and effectively ended San Francisco’s season.
But now, the 49ers are optimistic that their young quarterback will return to full strength for a chance to make an impact in 2023. If the team’s initial timeline is correct, he should be able to resume practice and play in six months, which would put him on the field in early September for the start of the 2023 season.
The 49ers announced Friday that brock purdy had surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow and is expected to begin a throwing progression program in three months. The team said that the “successful” surgery was conducted by Dr. Keith Meister in the Dallas area.
According to the team, Purdy’s ulnar collateral ligament was repaired with an internal brace by Meister. He was also given a synthetic “check-rein” to help reinforce the ligament as it heals.
It will be important for Purdy to stay active during the recovery process, and the team expects him to start a throwing progression program in three months. Once he’s fully cleared to practice and play, the team expects him to be ready to compete with 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance for the starting job in training camp.
A six-month return to action is typically a safe timeframe for a player to recover from a UCL repair, but doctors won’t know that until they see the damaged ligament. Depending on whether the procedure is a UCL repair or a complete reconstruction, the timeline could stretch to 9-to-12 months.
There are only a few instances in the NFL where quarterbacks have had this type of surgery. In 2007, Jake Delhomme had Tommy John surgery and he said his arm was “better than ever.”
But there is a good chance that his strength will be depleted, which would mean he’s unlikely to make it back to the NFL in time for the start of the season. The same thing happened to Nick Mullens in his first year in the NFL, when he needed a total elbow reconstruction after tearing his UCL in the fourth game of the season.
He missed the next four games and was replaced by Josh Johnson in the final two, but the 49ers still managed to win eight of their last nine games after his injury. The only loss was a 31-7 blowout to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game.
Despite a rocky start to his career, brock purdy showed that he was more than capable of becoming a starter in the NFL. With a healthy elbow, he should be able to take his performance to another level in 2023.
The 49ers are hopeful that brock purdy will be able to return to the field for the 2023 season and potentially even lead the team to a Super Bowl. The Niners are in need of a veteran starting quarterback and he could be the guy.
