Jack Higgins Surgery – Back on the Track After Brain Surgery

Richmond youngster Jack Higgins is back on the track after brain surgery.

After a gruelling year, he’s back on the track and looking to regain his form.
The affable 20-year-old underwent two operations to fix an abnormal brain bleed last July that left him in danger of paralysis or even death if he didn’t get it right. He has just started contact training wearing a helmet and it’s a big step forward for the young gun.

In the past, it’s been rare for a player to undergo such a procedure. But Jack, who grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne, was prepared for anything – including paralysis or death – after his diagnosis last year.

It was a frightening moment for Higgins and one that left him feeling like he had lost control of his career.

He cried when he was told he would need to undergo life-changing surgery and feared he’d never play footy again.

Thankfully, the Tigers have been able to get him back on the track and his quick recovery has been a welcome sight for the team.

While a brain bleed is not uncommon, it isn’t always linked to head knocks and Richmond have attributed the injury to a blood vessel abnormality that he has unknowingly had since birth. The club says the player will undergo surgery to repair the vessels responsible for the bleed and they expect him to be able to return to senior footy next season.
