The incident occurred near Winnetka, Illinois, when 43-year-old Laidley jumped into the water to assist children who were tubing, as confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Village of Winnetka in a statement provided to ABC News.
However, Laidley encountered difficulties while swimming and ultimately drowned, according to the statement. Efforts were made to resuscitate him by performing CPR after he was pulled back onto the boat. Once the boat returned to the shore, Winnetka Fire medics provided advanced life support. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Laidley passed away later at a local hospital.
