Sydney Leroux Divorce Announced on Social Media
Sydney Leroux has won a lot of soccer games in her career, but one thing she hasn’t won is a happy marriage. The US women’s national team forward announced on social media this week that she and her husband, Dom Dwyer, have decided to separate. They have two children together, including a toddler named Cassius who has already donned more than his fair share of soccer jerseys, from Spurs to Barcelona and Orlando Pride.
The couple was married for six years. During that time, Leroux became an integral member of the US women’s national team, winning Olympic and Women’s World Cup medals. She’s also a two-time NWSL champion and scored 37 goals in her professional MLS career. The striker currently plays for Angel City FC in the NWSL.
According to a post on her Instagram, the separation came as a surprise to Leroux and Dwyer’s friends and family. “We are both still working on this,” the post read. “Thank you for the support, love, and prayers.” Apparently, the pair did not have a prenuptial agreement. Leroux has since dropped Dwyer’s last name from her social media profiles and removed all photos of them together from her account, reports New York Post. She has not posted a reason for the breakup but fans speculated it had to do with her upcoming move to Toronto FC, where Dwyer is the starting striker.
Despite the separation, Leroux has not given up on her professional career. She will join the club in the Canadian Women’s Premier League ahead of the 2022 season, reports USA Today. In addition, she says she will not compete in the Olympics this summer because her “plans have changed.”
It would not be surprising if Leroux found herself back in the USWNT fold in the near future. Her performance in the NWSL this year will be a big factor in whether she earns a call-in from coach Vlatko Andonovski.
Sydney Rae Leroux (born May 7, 1990) is a Canadian-American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for Angel City FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Leroux has won a total of 75 caps for the United States national women’s football team, scoring 35 goals along the way.
She was born in Canada and grew up playing for the country’s youth teams, but later switched allegiance to play with the United States national team. She has represented the US at both the 2012 and 2015 Women’s World Cups.
Leroux is a former NWSL MVP and has a wry sense of humor that has been displayed in her social-media posts. She once filmed herself putting bright pink lipstick on her husband’s face when he fell asleep while watching soccer on TV. She also once threw a ball at her son while he was wearing his Spurs jersey. Her husband, MLS star Dom Dwyer, did not seem amused.
