The Passing of Dusty Hill Cause of Death
Rock music was shocked to learn last month that ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill passed away at the age of 72. He was a founding member of the popular band alongside guitarist Frank Beard and drummer Billy Gibbons, helping to define a unique and influential era of modern music. While his loss was mourned by many fans and fellow musicians alike, the details surrounding the cause of Hill’s death have remained largely mysterious. In a new interview with Variety, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons opened up about his late bandmate and addressed the rumors surrounding the cause of Hill’s untimely death.
The band has not revealed what caused Hill’s passing, however, they did share on Facebook that the bassist was going to be taking a “short detour back to Texas” to address his hip issues. Hill had been struggling with his health for some time, and he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2000. The musician also struggled with several other illnesses, including arthritis and chronic bursitis.
According to Billy Gibbons, despite the band having known about his health issues, they did not expect Hill to pass away so soon. Gibbons said that he had spoken to the bassist’s wife and doctors, but they could not tell him what caused his sudden demise. The frontman said that he believes the cause of death is related to his hip issue.
Hill was born Joseph Michael Hill in 1949 and began playing guitar for money at an early age, a talent that he showed for throughout his life. He played with local bands before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s, where he joined the Moving Sidewalks as a bassist and vocalist. The group was a psychedelic group that was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.
In 1968, Hill formed the band ZZ Top along with fellow members Frank Beard and Billy Gibbons. The trio was an influential part of the early era of rock and roll, and their success led to a lengthy career. The band has sold millions of records over the years, and their music has been a huge influence on other rock bands.
Despite the recent tragedy, the rest of the members of ZZ Top have continued to perform and release new music. The group was recently in the studio recording their latest album, which is expected to be released later this year. They also plan to continue touring, and Gibbons vowed that the group would carry on without their former bassist. The group’s guitar tech, Elwood Francis, will take Hill’s place for the time being. Many famous musicians have offered their condolences to the group on social media. Ozzy Osbourne wrote, “Rest in peace #DustyHill of @ZZTop -my thoughts go out to his family and to Frank and Billy.” The members of Foghat, David Coverdale, Zakk Wylde, Paul Stanley, Flea, and Tony Iommi have also offered their condolences.
