Driver in Critical Condition After Crash on Garden State Parkway in Montvale

Following a collision on the Garden State Parkway on Thursday evening, one individual was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

According to Sgt. Alejandro Goez of the New Jersey State Police, a Toyota vehicle was involved in a crash in the northbound lanes of Montvale at approximately 7:08 p.m. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Nyack Hospital with serious injuries. As of 10 p.m., the left lane remained closed as the accident investigation was underway.

Montvale is a borough located in northern Bergen County, New Jersey, sharing a border with New York. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the borough had a population of 8,436, representing an increase of 592 (+7.5%) from the 2010 census figure of 7,844. The population in 2010 had already shown growth of 810 (+11.5%) from the 2000 census count of 7,034.

Montvale was officially incorporated as a borough on August 31, 1894, comprising portions of Orvil Township and Washington Township. The borough’s formation was part of the “Boroughitis” phenomenon, with 26 boroughs established in Bergen County in 1894 alone.

Montvale acquired additional land from Orvil and Washington townships in 1906, and from Upper Saddle River in 1912. A portion of Montvale was transferred to River Vale on May 20, 1959, while Montvale and Upper Saddle River exchanged territories on December 9 and 14 of the same year. The name of the borough reflects its geographical location.
